History and chapel

Painting Gratschwirt The Gratsch chapel
Through the Gratschwirt, a four-star family hotel in South Tyrol, you’ll enter the heart of the ancient history of Alta Val Pusteria.

The area of the Dolomites is rich in heritage and vestiges of the past and the Gratschwirt Hotel is no exception. According to historians, the Roman road that crossed Val Pusteria, where you can still find some of the original milestones, passed above the Gratsch bridge, reaching Aufkirchen and ending in Villabassa.

The milestone discovered in front of the small Gratsch chapel was restored and placed inside that same chapel.

In 1672, the “Gratsch property” changed hands no less than 18 times, until purchased by the Pircher family in 1905.

Since then the Pircher family has never stopped making changes and improvements, which have made the Gratschwirt a highly appreciated and frequented hotel and restaurant.

The Gratsch chapel
Your vacation in South Tyrol, at the Gratschwirt family hotel in Dobbiaco, in the Dolomites, begins immediately within a context of historical interest. Another vestige of the hotel’s important past, meaning the annexed “Gratsch Chapel”, is located right next to the Gratschwirt Hotel. The chapel was built between the end of the 17th and early 18th century and, since then, no carriage has ever passed by without stopping there. It should be recalled that at that time, the hotels at the foot of the Tre Cime were reserved exclusively for princes and kings. Originally, the Gratschwirt was part of a horse resting and changing station, which provided the original owners with a sizeable additional income along with the inn business. On 4 February 1905 Josef Pircher acquired the entire “Gratsch property”. The famous Gratschwirt Hotel in Dobbiaco has a very extensive and interesting history.
